How do you sleep at night knowing that Exxon oil company polluted Alaska's waters in Valdez?

and not only do they not have to pay for it, you keep buying their gasoline?

How do you sleep at night knowing this? How do you sleep at night knowing that Exxon oil company polluted Alaska's waters in Valdez?
You know...

Even if you don't shop at Exxon Mobil, you might be buying their gas, based on distribution around the country...

that aside...I'll never forget an incident about a month after the Valdez...There was a fair and I went with my wife (then girlfriend) and one of her friends...they had a diving team jumping into the water...and the last dive, they put gasoline on the water and lit it...I started chanting ';Exxon, Exxon...'; the place went nuts...

I sleep at night the same way you do...I close my eyes and count oil stained birds...How do you sleep at night knowing that Exxon oil company polluted Alaska's waters in Valdez?
I lived on Kodiak Island and had subsistance crab pots out when the Exxon Valdez oil slick arrived. My name was on the list of plaintiffs, but, after 8 years of endless filling and filing afadavits and other paperwork - I got stationed on Attu Island with the military and thanks to only getting mail twice a month - missed a deadline. So my name fell off the roster of folks who were suspose to be compensated for actual damages.

I still live in Alaska and avoid Exxon and Mobil products like the plague.
It was an accident. Exxon paid about $3.5 billion for the cleanup and other fines.

The lawsuit that went to the Supreme Court was about additional damages and punitive fines. They allowed the actual damages to stand, but not the additional punitive damages. Still over $500 million.

That means Exxon paid out over $4 billion.

That's quite a lot. Or doesn't it satisfy some irrational hatred of ';Big Oil';?

And were you aware that some of Obamas biggest campaign fundraisers / bundlers are ';Big Oil'; executives?

I guess that means he should be called Oil-bama?
It was the result of one drunk captain...it was entirely one mans fault and yes they did pay for it and plenty. He personally lost his job of course and his license, admittedly a small price.

I used to be married to a merchant marine who was a captain and an idiot. He drank a lot and made many errors but fortunately no lives were lost and nothing huge ever happened. His company certainly didn't know that he drank or they would have fired him.

Believe it or not spilling oil is not the worse thing those yahoos do out there, not all but some, will throw stow aways over board so their records don't get tarnished, this is no joke...I went to a port in Africa with him once and we somehow managed to end up with 3 stow aways on board and of course didn't notice till we were well underway...they should be thankful I was there because I honestly think they would have ';disposed'; of them.

I am sure some are very good and are solid people but some are real idiots, they have no body to govern them out there, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
GOP = Big Oil

It was a 5-4 decision with all the GOP favorites voting to reduce the payout.

Unfortuately they were also following the maritime loss precedent that stated the the losses paid had to equal the amount of the actual losses. that was the basis for their decision.

And to be fair, Exxon has already paid several billion dollars in clean up fees and fines.
I do my best to protect the environment and recycle and concerve energy.

My not sleeping won't help the 20 year old situation...are you seriously implying that I should not have slept since I was 19 years old? I would not have been able to finish college, work or start my family, or do the volunteer work I have done in my community for the last 20 years! I would have been too sleepy!

Seriously - all we can do is live the best we can and live our lives in a responsible and helpful manner.
I live in valdez alaska and i sleep quite well. Are you just stupid or are you just ignorant? the people involved in that accident have been charged and are dealing with the consequences. I was only 4 years old too...

and as far as buying gas goes, no, i dont buy it. it's expensive as hell here.

in the summer time it can make sleeping kind of difficult though because of the constant daylight.
I sleep pretty good, is this the best you can do? citing an accident that happened over 20 years ago. They did clean it up and paid a fine. how do you sleep supporting people that will pass taxes to put the price of fuel so high some won't be able to afford heating oil this winter?
They have paid more then $120 Million so far... and that is not even including the settlement which is going to give every resident near there like $15k each... Some of them weren't even born when it happened...

You should study, man.

Accidents happen all the time. Clinton had a pill factory bombed once... so a bunch of kids in the middle east didn't get their medicine... Do you still sleep?
I can't believe that you care about an accident....Oh and BTW the captain does not steer the ship....You people should learn something about navigation before piping off.....I sleep just fine and drive my car everywhere that I go.......Go hug a tree Dem. Lib.
They have to pay for it. They have to pay around $500 million in compensation to those affected by the spill on top of the cleanup costs. The amount was lowered to reflect actual cost. That is for 33,000 people to split.
The same way I sleep since Big Oil took over control of Iraq's oilfields and are setting the stage to do the same in Iran. Not Well.

I sleep just fine. But then it wasn't the Corporations fault as much as it was one drunk sea captain.

His name is Hazelwood and the ship was called the Valdez BTW. The bay is called Prince William Sound.
How do you sleep at night knowing that this could happen again when we try to import oreign oil. Drill here, it's safer than importing it, now isn't it?
I sleep pretty good, thanks for asking.

Wasn't that oil spill due to the captain of the tanker ship being drunk?

And I think they have paid for it.
It was a tragic accident. Exxon will pay over $2.5 Billion.

I sleep pretty good.
They've already paid for the cleanup, fines, and recently 500 million in penalties.

I sleep quite well, thankyou
I sleep fine. I'm a Republican, ie. realist. And I realize it's an imperfect world.
i didn't even know ?

that's so sad D:

luckily i am not even old enough to have a car so i don't have to worry about feeling guilty buying their gas :)
';There is no wrong, there is no right -- and I sleep very well at night';
Was Exxon driving the boat while drinking a bottle of Jack Daniel's?
That was only 20 years ago. After the 2nd day, I was over it; I sleep well.
The Supreme Court has done worst things these past few months.
And you don't buy gasoline? I sleep fine, thank you.
Like a baby.

..while I'm sleeping I leave all my appliances on, and my 2 cars running...
Pretty well. After all, its not my fault or my problem.
