Do you mean in 1989 from the tanker Valdez?? If so, it spilled about 11 million gallons ( a conservative estimate)into Prince William Sound in Alaska, but the actual amount recovered remains in debate because the oil reclaimed was emulsified with seawater. NOAA stated in 2007 that at least 26,000 gallons are still in the sandy soil .In 2004, scientists from the University of North Carolina, determined that it would take an additional 30 years for shoreline habitats to recover. Exxon was fined $5 billion dollars in 1994 for ( an amount equal to ONE YEARS PROFITS for Exxon at the time.) for allowing a drunk captain Joseph Hazelwood to operate their tanker to a disasterous end. To DATE, Exxon/Mobil hasn't paid ONE CENT !!!! They have made numerous appeals and had the fine reduced to $2.5 billion. They have set aside the money and are making $400,000 per year in interest on it. Meanwhile ExxonMobil, the most profitable company in the world, set a new record for the largest annual PROFIT by a U.S. company of $40.6 billion, beating the former record of $30.9 billion that they also held from the previous year! Yet they can't see fit to pay $2.5 for letting a drunk captain ruin the enviornment in Alaska?!?!? Think about THAT next time your car needs gas!
