There's not a simple answer to this question. Exxon and other oil companies do not just make money from selling oil, but also from refining it and marketing refined product. Keep in mind that much of the gas they sell comes from oil purchased from others. That includes other oil companies, Canada, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and others. They don't make any money from that oil, but only from their sale of refined product. From the unrefined oil they do control, the profit varies from where it comes from. Some older oil wells they own they can probably pull it out of the ground for $20-$30 a barrel. Also how do you figure out this? They search for oil in many places. Let's say it costs them $3 billion to search in 100 places for oil. They find oil in 3. Each spot they searched cost $30 million to explore. Assuming they don't have to pay royalties (a bad assumption) each ';find'; costs them $30 million and lets say each find'; has $1.5 billion of oil in it. Well the oil they pump out of those three finds costs a lot less than what they get for it, but they get nothing for those other 97 dry holes. How do you figure out that? Better to look at their gross margins. Gross profit divided by gross revenues. In ';bad'; times (when oil was at $20 a barrel, their margins are probably around 2-3%. In ';good'; times it may be as high as 8-9%. Compared to Microsoft which has gross margins in the 25-30% range.
