NEW YORK 鈥?Exxon Mobil Corp., which set annual profit records in each of the last two years, rewarded its chief executive with a 10 percent raise that brought his total compensation to $23.9 million in 2008, according to an Associated Press analysis of a regulatory filing.

They will say that they ';keep people employed'; and that they ';work hard'; and no one should tell them what they should do with ';their money';--even though they get so much government subsidies and prices are kept artificially high because of the OPEC cartel when cartels and trusts are supposed to be illegal! How Will Conservative Oil Company Apologists Rationalize Exxon CEO's $24 Million Compensation in a bad economy?
I'm a Capitalist type, so I feel that if he's good enough to get that much, hooray for him. I also feel that laws should be applied evenly and equally. The highest cancer rate in the country is in west Statin Island, which is right next to and down wind from the Exxon refinery in Linden NJ. At least, this qualifies as negligent homicide. How about applying his salary and subsidies to the families of thousands of people that died because they decided to build a refinery in the greater NY area, KNOWING, it was a life threatening decision. Give him his 23M and a cell next to Medoff.
He's chief executive officer of one of the largest companies in the world which supplies the world with one of the most fought over resources on the planet. Sounds like he ';earned'; the money. Sure, millions of people have died because of Exxon and the like, but I'm sure he sleeps well at night...
The same reasons liberal apologists will rationalize the enormous amounts of cash Hollywood moguls and actors, musicians, and athletes will all make in this bad economy?

If you don't like his compensation, go buy some stock and vote against his supporters on the board.
You do realize that the taxes that the federal government gets from gas and oil are far greater than the profits by the oil companies... AND THEY ARE THE ONES DOING THE WORK.

Why aren't you angry with the government for the profits they made off gas and oil that they didn't work for?
Sounds like a company rewarding their employee for helping them do what they are in business for......MAKING MONEY!! You are a prime example of anti-capitalism pro socialism in this country today. Waaaaaa!!!!..waaaa!!!!! that company made too much money!!! We have to do something about it!!
because the board of directors determine the compensation, not the government...doesn't matter what the economy is doing, as long as he satisfies the board. btw...i don't apologize for anybody...i think the smack down is on you!!!
Don't have to rationalize it any more than I have to try and rationalize your salary. The economy isn't very bad over at Exxon.
This will be done by tieing this to supply and demand, but not the economy. Last summer we did have higher than normal prices and they are headed that way again.
So what! why are people not up tight when a basketball player make over 40 million a year or even a actor.
That means record tax dollars collected too.
They will stand below him, figuratively, waiting for some of that to ';trickle down';. Methinks they'll have a long wait!
They earned it.
Did Exxon require a bail out?
